My Gramp was a special man in my life and I was blessed to have had him around for his 92+ years. He lost Gram last October after having celebrated 72 years of marriage. Gramp was the youngest child born to Chester and Hazel Banta Weed. His parents were both from New York; they honeymooned in Maine and liked it so much they moved here in the early 1900s. He grew up in Manchester and was the youngest of five, after sister Delphine and brothers Bill, Ken and Emmerson. He was very close with his brother Emmerson, who was one year and one day older. Gramp told me his parents kept Emmy behind a year so that they could go to school together (many thought they were twins!) He served in the Navy during WWII and spent a year and a half overseas. He and his three brothers served in WWII (their mother was a Gold Star Mother, she lost her son Emmy). After Gramp returned from the war, he met my Gram, Claire Jones. They married shortly after and raised two sons, David and Gary. He worked as an electrician for the IBEW for 25 years, and prior to that did other jobs (milkman, bakery, draftsman) while earning his apprenticeship. In turn, his son David and grandson Bill followed in his footsteps and took up the same trade. Gramp was given his family bible after the death of his sister, and it sparked my interest in genealogy. I found a lot of info on our family and even solved a few unknowns. It was exciting to share this with him, and he was amazed with all the info I was able to find. I was lucky he was here to help fill in some of the blanks. I loved to sit and listen to stories of his family and childhood. He was a hard worker, always puttering around the house or fixing something. While growing up, he spent time working in his gardens, growing vegetables that I would help my grandmother clean and cut up (and eat!) He loved planes and once owned his own, taking us kids for a ride was a thrill. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as antique cars and watching American Pickers. Gramp had a long and good life, and not only will he be missed by his sons, but also his grandchildren and great grandchildren: Davids children Sonya Berry of Fayette, ME and her daughter Stefanie; Bill Weed of Parkersburg, WV; Garys children Melanie Biggs of New Boston, NH and her sons Conner and Gavin; Aaron Weed of Woodstock, VT and his children Isabelle, Owen and Arlo; and Emerson of Greenville, ME and his son Brayden. I will miss you Gramp, its not a Goodbye but a See You Later! Sonya
