Obituary for Peter J. Ezzy
Peter J. Ezzy, age 78, died on September 8, 2022, from complications of a brain tumor. He was born in Van Buren, Maine on May 12, 1944. He was the son of Germaine Azzie and Antoine Ezzy. Peter graduated from Van Buren Boys’ High School in 1961 and from the University of Maine Orono in 1965. In 1971, Peter married Jane Labbe whom he’d known since 6th grade. Peter and Jane graduated together from 8th grade, high school and college, and retired from Maine State Government on the same day in 2004.
Peter earned a Master’s degree in Education in 1967 and a Master’s degree in Public Administration in 1979, both from the University of Maine, Orono. Peter worked for some 33 years in Maine State Government, managing various health care programs. In addition, he actively participated in the Federal Emergency Management Agency as an Air Force mobilization augmentee. This culminated in Peter being promoted to lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force.
Upon his retirement from State Government, Peter dedicated considerable time to the Maine Association of Retirees (MAR) and quickly became a faithful supporter of the organization. He served on the executive board of MAR, rising to the position of President. His eight years of involvement with MAR overlapped with his participation on the executive board of the University of Maine Senior College in Augusta. Peter was part of the Senior College executive team which developed courses and activities for seniors in the Central Maine area. In addition to his leadership on the board of Senior College, Peter taught several courses for seniors. He was also a long-time member of the American Legion. In his spare time, Peter enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, fishing, and playing petanque with his friends.
Peter was predeceased by his parents, his brother Gabriel Ezzy of Fort Kent, his brother Michael Ezzy of Van Buren, and his sister Antonia Davis of California. He is survived by his wife, Jane L. Ezzy of Augusta; his son Aaron Ezzy of Bass Harbor; his daughter Sarah Ezzy and his son-in-law Blake Mobley and their sons Finn and Rex Mobley of Del Mar, California. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law George and Shirley Ezzy of Augusta; his sister Thecla Quine of Virginia, his sister and brother-in-law Betty and Geoff Fitzgerald of New Hampshire, and his sister Cecile Sparhuber of New York.
Peter was kind-hearted and patient, with a wonderful sense of humor. He will be sorely missed. A celebration of life is being planned for later this year with details to be announced. Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, Maine.
